Tile Building

This is a  five-story building in Kuramae, Tokyo, consisting of a photo studio and its office and tenants. The Kuramae neighborhood is dotted with buildings with a hint of individual ownership, while large housing complexes and lodging facilities are under construction. The client describes Kuramae as "a marble-like area with a mix of newcomers and old-timers, but  not quite blended together. ”

In order to maximize the width and depth of the space required for a photo studio, the elevator and stairs, which are usually located at the side or back of the building, were placed at the front of the building, and the walls were finished with custom-made tiles to make the experience of going up and down a special one. A blind wall was installed on the front street side to satisfy the conflicting requirements of the tenants, who wanted openness, and the photography studio, which wanted privacy. From the street, the building looks like a stage set, with occasional movement of people appearing through the large openings and gaps in the wall. Rather than resetting the conditions surrounding the building and the relationships between people in different positions, we aimed to create a close relationship between the building and the people in different positions, while preserving each condition as much as possible.
